Power Skills
Ways of Working

Next Mission: A Veteran’s Journey into Project Management explores how leadership, resilience, and adaptability translate across careers, industries, and moments of change. In this session, Juan Nieves, PMP, shares his personal transition from a 23-year career in U.S. Army Aviation to civilian project management, and how his long-standing military motto “Adapt and Overcome” evolved from a guiding principle into a leadership compass for navigating uncertainty.

Through storytelling and practical parallels between military operations and project delivery, Juan introduces the ADAPT Framework (Acknowledge, Define, Align, Partner, Transform) as a simple, actionable model for leading through transition, ambiguity, and complexity. The session connects real-world leadership experiences to modern project management practices and highlights why adaptability and composure under pressure are essential skills for today’s project managers.

This session is designed for both veterans and non-veterans and will resonate with anyone facing change, whether it’s a career pivot, a challenging project, or a new leadership role. Attendees will leave with renewed clarity, a practical leadership mindset, and tools they can immediately apply to their professional “next mission.”
